All Souls Mass

November 5, 2021

The All Souls Mass was held in our parish on Tuesday, 2 November, and was attended by a number of parishioners and live-streamed. In the weeks leading up to the Mass, parishioners were invited to write the names of their dearly departed on pieces of paper which were then placed around the communion rail of the church with candles on top of them. It was truly a beautiful and reverential sight to behold.

The final blessing was held in the church garden at the monument to the unknown refugee, “The Hollow Men”. Parishioners were asked to carry the candles from the church and place them around the monument. In his blessing, Father Sjaak prayed the prayer of Pope Francis, as a tribute to the migrants who lost their lives in flight, an excerpt of which is here:

‘’Merciful God, we pray to you for all men, women, and children who have died after leaving their homelands in search of a better life. Though many of their graves bear no name, to you each one is known, loved, and cherished. Merciful God and Father of us all, wake us from the slumber of indifference, open our eyes to their suffering, and free us from the insensitivity born of worldly comfort and self-centeredness.’’
